Keeping Your Energy Bill Low While Selling Your Home

By Jynette DeMarco

While selling your home you should try and keep your energy bill low. Not only will it save you money and be good for the environment, it will also be appealing to potential buyers. There are a few easy steps you can take to keep your energy bill low.

  • Fixtures such as fountains are a nice touch to a house and would be good for the buyer to see functioning. However, keeping them on full time can be costly. Try to turn them on when someone is looking at your house.
  • Appliances that are plugged into your wall may be using more energy than you think and so it is important to unplug these items and not just turn them off on the wall switch. Even removing toasters and other small appliances can help reduce your electricity bill.
  • Removing these small appliances will also clean up your kitchen area. A nicer and neater house without excess cords and small appliances will help the buyer picture their own items in the house and be more appealing to them.
  • Lower your heat or air conditioning. Controlling the climate of the inside of your house if fairly expensive and requires a lot of energy. Try to at least lower your heating or air conditioning while selling your home.
  • Remember to turn heat or AC back to their normal levels when a potential buyer is visiting your home so that they are comfortable and know that the systems function properly.
