Trudy's Tex-Mex Restaurant and Bar is a True Austin Icon

By S. Mathur

Folks should come to Trudy's if they are in the mood for "Tex-Mex cuisine. Original Tex-Mex that has been an Austin icon for nearly 40 years," says Preston Dumas, Operations Manager. Generations of Austin residents and students at the University of Texas campus nearby have happy memories of the food and drink, in a welcoming atmosphere.

Dumas says that the "Atmosphere is comfortable, not stuffy, we welcome all types/walks of people and allow our staff to be themselves. This provides an opportunity for all people to enjoy Trudy's without feeling judged or uncomfortable. Our drinks are absolutely as important as our food, and we have had the best margarita in Texas for 2 years as voted by Texas Monthly. We try to use natural, local, and fresh products anytime they are available."

Trudy's is best known for the stuffed avocados, migas, and the Mexican Martinis. The drinks at Trudy's are a major attraction and for many people, the real reason for a visit. The Mexican Margaritas are limited to 2 per person per visit, but that's enough for most people. And of course, there is a generous supply of free chips and salsa with the drinks.

The food includes old and new favorites. The stuffed avocados are fried, breaded, stuffed with spiced chicken and cheese and served with chipotle, suiza, and queso. The spicy Shrimp Diablo is wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, stuffed with a jalapeño and served with habañero jelly. The Honey Cholula Chicken is a new favorite, and when it comes to Tex-Mex breakfasts, the migas can't be beat.

Weekend brunches are popular, as are game nights. Besides the indoor seating area, there is a patio and on weekends the parking lot becomes a standing drink-while-you-wait area. The restaurants recently became open for lunch, and can get busy in the evenings. Reservations will prevent having to wait for a table, but with a Mexican Martini or two to dispose of, the waiting doesn't seem so onerous.

Some tips from the regulars:
"I'm a vegetarian so I usually go for the veggie flaquities dinner. It comes with rice and beans on the side. Pretty delicious. I like having my Mexican martini with the Jimador tequila and Patron Citronge. Remember, they cut you off at 2 shakers! Don't overdose on the free chips they keep bringing to you, you won't have room for what you ordered. The service is efficient and the ambience is superb for watching sports and for general tomfoolery. I'm definitely going back."

"My new favorite fish tacos! Crusted fish on a single corn tortilla-that doesn't fall apart! Mexican margarita was good. Busy, college area restaurant that was right on target."
