After beginning as a student there in 2004 and staying on through four different ownership changes, The Woodlands Yoga Studio was set to close down for good about four-and-a-half years ago.
But at the behest of many other yoga students who made their home there, Sue Brooks swooped in and bought the studio.
"My goal was to offer high quality hatha yoga to the community at affordable prices with the highest number of certified instructors," Brooks said.
Nine types of yoga comprise the 39-class slate at The Woodlands Yoga Studio, aptly named for its location in The Woodlands, Texas, with a little something for everyone.
There are basic classes for beginners, mixed-level classes for intermediates and Vinyasa flow for the advanced students. Additionally, there are many specialty classes offered at The Woodlands, including gentle yoga, yoga for seniors, prenatal yoga, core balance, meditation, restorative and yin.
"The practice of yoga gives the practitioner an overall sense of well being," Brooks said. "It lowers blood pressure and aids in the function of many of the internal systems in our body. It can keep a body strong and flexible, thus aiding in the overall quality of life. The benefits are so numerous that many books have written about it."
Another class offered at The Woodlands is geared towards a more specific demographic, one in which all its members share a very unique bond: breast cancer survivors.
"These were classes that were taught at the hospital and the instructor came to me and asked if they could move it over to our studio and I agreed," Brooks said, adding that she did not begin this practice.
The class for breast cancer survivors is offered twice a week, and perhaps the coolest part is it's free.
Eight RYT-500 instructors make up the staff of The Woodlands, a number which Brooks said no other studio in the area can match. Big names in yoga instruction have been known to stop by the studio for weekend workshops, such as Cat McCarthy and Desiree Rumbaugh.
In addition to the weekend classes, Brooks works diligently to make sure there are night time classes available as well. These will begin around 7 or 7:30 p.m. on weeknights to fit the schedules of students who can't make it during the day.
"We are also the only studio to offer a weekly class for meditation only by an instructor who was certified by Deepak Chopra," Brooks added.
