The Bar Method Studio in Plano, TX: An Interview with Owner Marin Van Vleck

By Marina Jokic

For Marin Van Vleck, fitness was always a huge part of her life, from dance and competitive swimming to personal training. She developed a passion for the Bar Method as soon as she discovered it while living in Hollywood in 2005. "I remember stepping out of the Bar class so thrilled that I'd just found THE perfect exercise class. I was hooked immediately," Van Vleck adds. She was invited to become an instructor and received her training and certification from Bar Method's founder Burr Leonard, after which she started teaching, and quickly gained recognition in the next several years.

In 2009, she was selected to represent The Bar Method in a full-page editorial in US Weekly Magazine. In 2010 she was featured in the Bar Method DVD "Dancer's Body Advanced Workout." In 2011 she taught at elite fitness resort Rancho La Puerta, and in 2013 was seen on the pages of Health Magazine. Trying to balance a busy corporate career with theater, TV, singing gigs, and exercise instruction proved overwhelming, and Van Vleck, after consulting with friends in the Plano area, decided to make the move and open her own studio. She wanted to dedicate herself to teaching full-time, and was excited at the prospect of starting her own business.

The unique advantage of the Bar Method is that it yields results fairly quickly, and as Vleck adds, "It's so exciting to see clients who come often and consistently gain sculpted muscles and definition they've never seen before." In order to gain certification as an instructor, one must pass through a comprehensive 4 to 6 month training period, which emphasizes clients' safety and experience. What is more, the instruction almost feels like personal training, as teachers are able to offer movement modifications in case of injuries or mobility restrictions.

The Bar Method was notably developed with the help of physical therapists, which makes it accessible to a wide range of student levels. The method is tailored to a student's current ability, trying to build upon existing competencies ? from people who have disliked exercise their entire lives to hardcore athletes who want to improve and stay conditioned professionally. The added benefits are not just physical, Van Vleck says: "It was evident to me right away that this method had a widespread impact on clients ? physically, mentally and spiritually!"

Van Vleck's constant passion is fed by her desire to help people feel genuinely good about themselves, and gain increased confidence. In Plano, she feels at home, and wants to contribute to her community through bringing increased physical and spiritual well-being.
