Tasty Treats Give Way to Healthy and Happy Dogs at Canine Cookie Company

By Courtney Clark

It is common knowledge that people should take care of their bodies, starting largely with a healthy diet. Our furry friends are no different. Canine Cookie Company is McKinney's source for deliciously pup-friendly treats to keep our canine companions healthy and happy.

Stephanie Farrar conceived the idea for Canine Cookie Company in 2004 out of love for her dog Sherman. At the time, treats from China were beginning to be recalled due to ingredients that were dangerous, and sometimes even fatal, for dogs. Farrar says, "I knew that I could do better for my dog if I tried."

She began working on a recipe that would be healthy for Sherman, and the business grew from there. After years of wholesale work, selling at farmers' markets and festivals, and building her reputation and customer base, Farrar opened a store front six years ago on Louisiana Street.

Each cookie is hand cut and safe for man's best friend. The website explains, "We based our recipes on our commitment to healthy, natural, and simplistic nutritional standards." Cookies are made with only five ingredients while cakes contain seven, and sugar and salt are omitted completely. Treats follow a basic recipe: white flour, wheat flour, wheat germ, canola oil, brewer's yeast, garlic, and low-sodium broth (beef, chicken, or sweet potato flavor). After baking (with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives), dogs and owners get to enjoy tasty treats in fun shapes.

Canine Cookie Company offers a variety of treats in beef, chicken, or sweet potato flavor. Customers can try Little Bits, bite-sized treats for the tiniest of pets or for training. Three favorites are Nilla Woofers, Pup Tarts, and Squirrels. The Nilla Woofers, which contain no vanilla, are great for medium sized dogs, while Pup Tarts are made like tarts and are filled with peanut butter. Their most popular treat is the Squirrel, which is of course shaped like the furry creature.

The shop also sells cakes for pups' special occasions. Made with boneless-skinless chicken, carrots, and flour, frosting contains pure cream cheese and ricotta cheese. Special order cakes can be inscribed, while puppy cakes and pupcakes are smaller but just as delicious.

Canine Cookie Company has one main goal in mind: to provide healthy, delicious treats to our ever-loyal furry friends. With an array of flavors to choose from and even cakes to spoil pups, the shop is a must-stop for McKinney's dog lovers.
