Summer Night Music in Arlington TX at the Levitt Pavilion

By S. Mathur

There's a very simple recipe for a perfect summer evening - pack a picnic basket, grab a rug and your favorite people, and head out to the park for some music under the stars. At the Levitt Pavilion in Arlington, TX the music could be anything from world music, country, Texas singers/songwriters, Grammy Award winners, Indie artists, jazz, blues, gospel, folk, Americana, pop, rock, new age to children's concerts and up-and-coming new artists. "This year, we even had the Fort Worth Opera bring their popular Opera Shots to the Levitt," says Communications Director Cathy O'Neal.

Growing up in Brooklyn and Long Island, Mortimer Levitt attended music concerts in Prospect Park and Manhattan Beach. It stayed with him all his life and after retirement, he decided to build open air music venues that would be freely accessible to all. The first Levitt Pavilion was built in Westport CT in 1973.

The Arlington Levitt Pavilion, says O'Neal, "also has served as a catalyst for the revitalization of Downtown Arlington. For years, Arlington has tried to revitalize its downtown, but there was no reason for people to go downtown. The free concerts started drawing thousands each season, which has resulted in several new restaurants and businesses opening in downtown."

Music has always brought people together and O'Neal says that you can literally see this happening: "The pavilion also has been instrumental in community-building. On any given night, you can look across the lawn and see children, families, seniors, college students, business leaders, elected officials and low-income families all in the same place enjoying music side by side. Our concerts draw neighborhood groups, family reunions, anniversary and birthday celebrations, class reunions -- you name it! The Levitt truly has become the gathering place for our community."

The core of the Levitt mission is to provide at least fifty free music events each year for the community. There is also free parking and people are welcome to bring their own food and beverages. For low-income families, this makes all the difference. All this makes some of the finest music anywhere accessible to all.

Judging from concertgoers' responses, the Levitt Pavilion's mission has been a resounding success:
"I love the Pavilion, I just wished they would have had this about 35 year's ago."

"We love it at the Levitt!! Best thing to come to Arlington since the Rangers and Cowboys!"

"BEST Family Entertainment spot in metroplex! We so enjoy having this in our own backyard - just bring out the chairs, ice chest, bag of munchies and we can sit back and enjoy the great music, fellowship of friends, great crowd, kids park/play area, food offerings and arts/crafts vendors that set up there too! The place has restaurants surrounding grounds to enjoy as well before or after the shows. The granddaughters enjoy the shows for kids offered as well FIREWORKS SHOW and Music offered is phenomenal."

"Free music is always great! The Levitt does it with style."
