After a Facelift, Stevens Park Golf Club Shines

By Elisha Neubauer

Golf ? it's a national pastime that enthrals both children and adults. A truly great golf course is a prize when it comes to attracting residents and travelers alike ? with homes located inside golf clubs becoming highly sought after, and golfing retreats and resorts reaching new heights of popularity. In order to not be left behind in the wake of the multitudes of prestigious new clubs opening every year, Stevens Park Golf Club in Dallas underwent a comprehensive revamp in 2011.

Featuring designs from Colligan Golf Design, one of the nation's top golf course architects, Stevens Park Golf Course was overhauled with Mini Verde putting surfaces, Premier Tif fairways, Tifton 10 rough grass, and an expanded short-game practice area. Over nine hundred new trees were brought in, and a complete renovation of all eighteen holes was completed throughout the process. In addition to the new tee boxes, fairways, and greens, Stevens Park Golf Course was refitted with thirty-eight new sand bunkers and over two thousand rose bushes. The course's promotional material calls it "The Rebirth of a Classic."

This seems fitting, when you think of golf's trajectory as a sport. With its emergence in the 1800s, golf has continued to remain steady in the collection of sports activities, but gained momentum in recent decades ? popping up more and more in movies, high schools, business retreats, and more.

"It's a game for a lifetime," says James R. Henderson, PGA Director of Golf at Stevens Park Golf Course. "All ages can play. I began playing when I was twelve years old. Fifty years later, I'm a senior playing with my son and grandson." Henderson describes golf as a sport that fosters a fellowship between its players. "The game itself brings out unique personality traits for every golfer, both good and bad," Henderson states. "Groups of golfers are able to play together for years, developing friendships over a lifetime."

According to Henderson, it is no surprise that Stevens Park has become so popular in Dallas. "It has always been a great neighborhood to live and work," he explains. "Golfers of all ages and ability LOVE Stevens Park. The golf course holds a special place in golfers' hearts." Stevens Park Golf Course was one of the original public courses constructed in the Dallas area, Henderson tells us. It is because of this reason that thousands of golfers are so attached to the park, having played their first round there.

Whether you are a professional, a lifer, or a beginning golfer, Stevens Park has something for everyone ? making sure you truly enjoy your round. Stevens Park Golf Course also offers golf lessons, online-only specials, tournaments, and many other events. There's always something to do, see, or enjoy. And of course, there's the scenery. "The key emphasis of the redesign was the change in the routing of the holes," Henderson reminds us. "We added length and captured the incredible views of downtown."
