Southern Comfort Food Reinvented at The Porch

By Marina Jokic

Located in the heart of the Knox-Henderson district of Dallas, the Porch restaurant has the warm, unassuming feel of a tavern with an emphasis on serving southern fusion dishes. Offering a full lunch, dinner and dessert menu, they also have an extensive array of cocktails, wines by the bottle and glass, and whiskeys. Specializing in Southern-inspired New American cuisine, the restaurant is centrally located a few miles from downtown.

The décor is characterized by a contrast between industrial elements and the typically cushy furniture of a lounge- vintage barn pendant lights, mixed warm wood tones, rough wood beams on the ceilings and comfortable red cushioned stools and booths allowing guests to concentrate on the delicious fare.

There is a relaxed and enticing sense about the place, beckoning customers to sit down and enjoy the ambiance. Simply put, in the words of West, "the Porch is a warm and inviting American tavern with southern inspired dishes and fresh cocktails." Guests can grab a casual drink, stay for an appetizing dinner with friends and family, or bring a colleague for a business lunch or meeting. The place is pretty versatile and fitting for any occasion, and its customers enjoy it in many different ways, West says.

The Porch's menu tries to integrate local and organic ingredients, supporting Texas' farming and ranching communities. "We have a very strong bond with numerous individual farmers [who] deliver to us several times a week," West points out. The restaurant aims to achieve a consistently high level of quality ingredients while at the same time sustaining and giving back to the community.

The laidback ambiance is in keeping with the hearty food offerings. The Porch is well-known for their Smoked Ham Mac & Cheese as well as the famous butter cake with Henry's Butterscotch Ice Cream from Plano. In addition, some of the more southern dishes include House Smoked Brisket Sliders and Cornmeal Battered Fritto Misto.

For those looking for something on the lighter side, give the Seared Tuna and Arugula, Roasted Tomato, Basil and Parmesan Soup, or the Housemade Veggie Burger a try. The alcoholic selection does not disappoint either. The whiskey list is wide-ranging and features Texas, Bourbon, American, Irish, Blended Scotch, Rye, and Single Malt Scotch whiskeys. If you happen to be in the neighborhood and are looking for a new restaurant to try, the Porch will not disappoint.
