SMU Graduate Aims To Give Students Higher Quality, Individualized Tutoring Experience at Tutor Revolution

By Kelly Church

Ashley Ram is the owner of Tutor Revolution and a Southern Methodist University alumna. After graduating college in 2010 with a passion for education, she became aware of the lack of quality tutoring available in McKinney, TX. That's when she started Tutor Revolution that now has a small staff of tutors that are among some of the most intelligent minds in education in the area.

"My dream was to impact students on an individual basis," Ram said. "With five years of tutoring experience, I was displeased with the status quo that is traditional tutoring."

Her business is structured to be simple and effective for the student. There are no contracts. Each tutoring program is tailored to the student and all tutors have backgrounds in education. Ram said part of Tutor Revolutions philosophy is to empower highly-qualified tutors so they provide the best educational experience for their students.

"A tutor should be a mentor, friend, teacher and a family's educational assistant," Ram said. "Additionally, effective tutoring takes a connection, honesty and communication between all parties. It is important that we all are aware of the progress."

According to Ram, most students don't think they need the additional help of a tutor in their education. She, however, recommends tutoring for students who aren't performing to their potential, have missed school due to illness and have fallen behind, or need to learn better time management and organizational skills.

"Although most of our students are seeking assistance with math, science, a standardized test or learning effective student skills, we have worked with a myriad of students of all ages," Ram said. "Some just need a little test prep or paper writing assistance. Others we assist for years."

Most of Tutor Revolution's tutors on staff are graduate students at the University of Texas Dallas or SMU. Ram said they don't have a large staff, but they differ from most tutoring services that recruit tutors after parents have already inquired about assistance. Tutor Revolution keeps their staff busy and recruits only top candidates as needed.

"All of these individuals love educating and tutoring and are [or] were some of the brightest students across the country," Ram said. "Presently, one of our tutors tested in the 97% for the MCAT, and another is a National Merit Finalist."

Tutor Revolution works with each student individually to develop materials, study methods and additional ideas that enhance a student's learning experience. Ram will work with students as young as elementary school. Tutors can be hired by the hour and discounted rates are available for families who take advantage of multiple sessions per week.
