Repertory Company Theatre Brings the Best on Broadway to the Dallas Community

By Courtney Clark

Repertory Company Theatre has been entertaining the North Dallas area for 30 years. With a variety of shows each season, it has grown from being committed to theatre arts education to also becoming a full-service theatre. Year-round classes, competitive auditions, and more bring the community together.

Repertory is one of the few full-services theatres in the North Dallas area. Artistic Executive Director Debra Carter says that when the theatre began three decades ago, it "began with a strong commitment to theatre arts." Today, in addition to being full-service, it has a Main Stage Season, a year-round School of Musical Theatre, and is looking to expand even more with its New Theatre Campaign.

Competitive auditions are held each January to join the REP Company of actors. The actors, who compete among hundreds of hopefuls, perform nine shows in a season, a Lights of Broadway over Thanksgiving weekend, and a New Year's Eve show. This year, the Company will be entertaining the community with the likes of Steel Magnolias, Little Shop of Horrors, Pride & Prejudice, Grease, and more.

RCT also offers classes to aspiring stars through the School of Musical Theatre. Year-round classes and workshops are available for ages six to eighteen and adults and are taught by professionals in the field.

The website explains that all education is performance based: "Each session focuses on building confidence, communication skills, and creativity. Performances take place in a working Theatre." With a low student/teacher ratio to provide the best instruction, kids are in good jazz hands. This fall, young actors and actresses and try the Twilight Cabaret Jr. singers' class, the Steel Magnolias Advanced Teen Class, and others.

Although Repertory has been around for several years, it's still growing under the New Theatre Campaign, which aims to expand programming and facilities. "We are acquiring a new Theatre Complex," Carter says. It will house a theatre for main stage shows, private events, and special presentations. There will also be a smaller theatre for School of Musical Theatre programs, lobbies, a box office, and a scene and costume shop. All donations from the community are welcome and appreciated.

Beyond all of this, RCT is even more involved with the North Dallas community with their new program, Beyond the Sale, which provides discounted tickets for local realtors. "Tickets may be used for promotion or customer appreciation," Carter explains. Those who partner with Repertory will be listed in show programs, on the website, and in the monthly newsletter to build up community interaction and foster growth.

Repertory Company Theatre has accomplished much in the decades it's been in action, and it only continues to expand. Whether kids or adults want to take classes, join the Company of actors, or simply enjoy the show, RCT is the place to go. After all, the motto says, "We're your theatre."
