Located on the southwest shore of Dallas, TX's White Rock Lake, The Filter Building is a historic complex that is home to local events, weddings and rowing program. The building is connected to the nonprofit White Rock Boathouse, as The Filter Building's revenue is used to support the boathouse's student rowing programs. President Thomas Carr says the two work hand-in-hand with Dallas Water Utilities to breathe more life into the rowing program.
"The Filter Building and Boathouse are leased under one agreement with Dallas Water Utilities," Carr says. "They were renovated and adapted for rowing and as an event venue under one construction contract in 2008.
The Boathouse was a sedimentation tank that had been filled with dirt and the Filter Building had been, oddly enough a Filter Building that was bricked in and abandoned in 1963 when White Rock water was no longer used for city water. We have preserved the early 20th century industrial building feel of the building."
Carr says the Texas Landmark Commission approved the buildings final plans and specifications, ensuring none of the historic elements of the property were put at risk. The community can enjoy the historic landmark by renting out the property and Carr says that prices to use The Filter Building are reasonably priced compared to other Dallas venues.
For the rest of 2016, the 5100 square foot space that overlooks the lawn and the lake can be rented starting at $1,000 for weekday usage. The second floor, a smaller 900 square foot space, can be rented for $500 and up. In 2017, prices will increase, as they will include a table and chair package.
"Weddings and receptions are our most common events," Carr says. "Relative to other Dallas venues, we are reasonably priced, we are very flexible with suggested caterers and we do not require guests to purchase alcohol from us. Security and tables and chairs are provided in our fees."
