Public School on Tap Makes Drinking at School Finally Legal!

By Elisha Neubauer

Public School- the place where you can learn about math, English...and craft beer? Now you can! Of course, I'm talking about Public School on Tap, a local gastropub located in Dallas, Texas. With the tagline "An Education in the Art of Food & Beer" greeting you from the front of the building, you can get a quick understanding of the concept behind the unique name and possibly get excited about what's to come when you step inside!

So where did this creative, attention-catching name come from?

"We wanted to create a New American Gastropub that delivers 'an education in the art of food & beer,'" states Liz Geavaras, VP of Marketing of Grill Concepts at Public School. "In other words, we wanted to teach our guests about delicious craft beer offerings and provide them with an out of the box, chef-driven menu."

The name isn't the only thing running with the educational theme. The eatery's menus are designed to look like standardized test sheets, the bane of every student's public school days, and composition notebooks. Happy Hour has been renamed 'recess' and the drink menu has been adequately called 'Today's Curriculum.' And, just like classwork, the drink and food menus are constantly rotating; so you're never going to get sick of the same ol' thing.

"We take a lot of classic dishes and put our own unique twist on them, such as our Chorizo Mac & Cheese that comes with a salt & vinegar crunch topping," Geavaras explains. "We also have great seasonal offerings, such as the Grilled Watermelon & Heirloom Tomato Stack, with sliced heirloom tomatoes, grilled watermelon, feta cheese, balsamic reduction, mint and macrona almonds."

For those looking to kick-start your education, Geavaras has some suggestions to get you on the right educational pathway. "Some of our most popular dishes include our Bison Burger, Roasted Poblano with Quinoa (with black beans, squash, mozzarella, toasted pipits, adobo sauce, lime cream, and cilantro lime rice), and the infamous Bacon Cheddar Tots, which are a must try!"

She goes on, stating, "Our most popular beers are ever changing, but some of our summertime favorites include Fruitlands (a Sour Gose option from Modern Times Beer in San Diego) and King Harbor IPA (from King Harbor Brewing in Redondo Beach, CA)."

Geavaras also wants to encourage all students to get on the honor roll- a voluntary program in which students learn first-hand about new menu items, beer classes, tap takeovers, and many other cool perks. She chuckles, saying, "There's a sense of fun just saying you're 'drinking at school' and we're making learning about food and drink a fun experience."
