Positivity in Cheering: Cheer Athletics

By Elisha Neubauer

Although Cheer Athletics is one of the largest state-of-the-art cheerleading training facilities in the United States, its beginnings are remarkably humble. It began in 1994, in a public park in Plano, Texas, with only two students. Having put Plano on the map with regards to the cheerleading industry, Cheer Athletics has grown exponentially in size, with several locations across Texas, numerous experienced staff members, and a reputation that proves that everything really is bigger in Texas.

Cheer Athletics currently has four locations under their name, Frisco, Plano, and Austin in Texas, as well as an expansion facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Having made their start in Plano, the community has embraced the cheerleading company with open arms. "Plano is the perfect location for our program because of the focus we put on being the most positive place for young athletes to grow," explains Maddie Swicegood, Marketing Director of Cheer Athletics. "Plano is a city of state champions, and we fit into that with our record number of National and World titles." Regardless of their locations, their reputation and success, paired with their positive and supportive coaching methods, have brought them families from all across the Metroplex area.

This positive and supportive coaching method has fostered their success and set them apart from their industry counterparts. "Cheer Athletics was founded on a 'hugs and high fives' mentality," says Swicegood, regarding their philosophy. "Our coaching staff strives to make Cheer Athletics the most positive, uplifting place a kid can be. We want our athletes to feel like CA is their 'home away from home,' and that they are always welcomed and accepted here."

Swicegood attributes their high volume of clients and large collection of awards and medals to this business practice. "Our business has thrived because we motivate our athletes to continuously better themselves using positive reinforcement and encouragement. We definitely push the kids hard and set the goals high, but we make sure that our customer base knows that our ultimate goal is to instill life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and a strong work ethic in our athletes."

Of course, there is more to Cheer Athletics than just winning trophies and learning the sport of cheering. "Winning is always fun, and is a great reward for hard work, but the friendships and bonds forged throughout the journey of the season are the things that stick with our athletes long after their time at CA is over." Cheer Athletics has multiple teams, ranging in age and skill level, including their Special Needs team, SuperKatz. "The goal of the SuperKatz program is to offer special needs athletes the opportunity to excel at something no one expects them to be able to do," details Swicegood. "The SuperKatz program also offers special needs children the chance to perform for a huge crowd at multiple events over the course of the year. It¹s super exciting and incredibly rewarding to see the smiles on their faces when they receive a standing ovation after putting on an awesome show for thousands of fans!"

The team at Cheer Athletics really sets the best interest of their athletes as the ultimate objective of everything they do. Steering clear of any unnecessary pressures, stress, or bully tactics, Cheer Athletics continues to support each athlete with the love, support, and positivity that the sport is meant to invoke in its audience. "Not only does cheerleading offer a fun form of exercise to encourage a healthy lifestyle, it also promotes friendships, teamwork, and problem solving skills that these athletes might not have the opportunity to develop otherwise."
