Popular Home Remodeling Features: An Interview with Kiva Cotham of Cotham Construction Services & Roofing

By Kiva Cotham

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Cotham Construction Services & Roofing was founded in 2007 by Marlon Cotham as a DBA. We started off with residential roofing and were fortunate enough to have some big hail storms come through Central Texas in 2008 and 2009. We became an LLC in 2009. After we became an LLC we started expanding from Residential Roofing to Commercial Roofing as well, we became a GAF Certified Roofing Contractor and also began expanding into Remodeling and New Construction. We are now a General Contracting company that can handle anything from handyman work to new construction and everything in between. We have received training from the best manufacturers in the business and strive to stay true to our motto "On Time. On Budget. Every Time."

What are current popular remodeling trends or features in the kitchen?

There are so many different trends it's hard to say. Farmhouse sinks, butcher block counters, and colored cabinetry are definitely some of the most popular features we've seen. Our customers are often opting for a pop of color with their cabinetry and even with their sinks, wanting to maximize their storage space, and adding automation to their kitchen. Sensor activated lights and faucets are becoming a norm.

What are current popular remodeling trends or features in the bathroom?

A lot of our customers are replacing their builder grade counter tops with granite, opting for seamless glass for their showers, and loving the Schluter System showers. Glass tiles are becoming more popular, bold colors, multi-head showers, heated floors, standalone tubs, and framed mirrors are also some of the more popular options we are seeing.

What are current popular remodeling trends or features for the overall interior?

Technology has become part of our everyday life so many people are opting to add U-sockets for easier charging of newer technological devices. We are also seeing a lot of floating shelves for storage; and the modern look has taken a backseat to a more classic and modest approach with more rounded designs, earth tones, and raw metal finishes. A lot of our customers are opting for eco-friendly choices!

What are current popular remodeling trends or features for the exterior?

On the exterior fiber cement siding such as James Hardie has really taken over the market. It's more durable than vinyl siding and offers your home much more protection. Also, Hardie products are built with your climate in mind.

Another popular feature for exterior are our Attic Breeze solar attic fans. This is an eco-friendly option that keeps the Texas heat out of your attic. These fans are incredibly quiet with a 14" fan blade and monocrystalline solar panel. Definitely the best on the market and not only do they keep your attic cooler but they significantly help reduce the cost of your electric bill during summer months.

Lastly people are really starting to understand the importance of a sound roofing system. There are so many options out there from composition, to metal, to tile. People are starting to see the benefits in investing in an upgraded system to ensure they're covered during storm season. Not only does this give the customer peace of mind but a new roof also increases the value of your home.

What's the best way to contact you?

I'm on the road a lot and meeting with customers so usually the easiest way to get a hold of me is through e-mail. I check my e-mail constantly and can usually get back in touch with you more quickly. I also have my cell phone on me at all times but am not always available to answer.
