Petropolitan: A Pooch Palace Providing Royal Treatment

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Dallas dog owners are one wag away from heaven. With Petropolitan - the everything-dog-except-veterinary-services place, dog owners can pamper their furry friends with everything from aromatherapy to playtime.

Co-owner Chris Watts opened the store in 2006. This true animal lover did not want to euthanize any creature, so becoming a veterinarian was out of the question. Watts describes his decision to open the Petropolitan, "I chose to advocate for their health and wellbeing instead. Animals helped me through the hardest times in my life and they deserve unconditional love for that."

Petropolitan offers grooming, bathing, pick up and drop off, nutritional guidance, and in-house playtime, and even a boutique for supplies. These extensive services continue with at-home urban dog walking/hiking and overnight pet sitting in your home.

Anxious and especially active dogs can relax with a day at the spa. Groomers at Petropolitan calm your pet with music, aromatherapy, and massage through a method called TTouch, which was designed to stimulate all the pressure points in the pet's body. Additional spa services include conditioning skin wraps for those with sensitive skin issues, teeth brushing, undercoat cleaning, and, yes, hair-dyeing for those older dogs greying around the snout.

With services like this, it's no wonder Petropolitan has won numerous awards since opening in 2006. Just one year later, this pooch palace won the Best Pet Boutique award from 2007 Readers Voice Awards. Other Readers Voice Awards through the years are for Best Pet Grooming and Best Doggie Day Care. This pet place even won Best Pet Supply in the Best of the Best Awards.

It's clear that Watts knows his business well and is happy to share his love and knowledge of dogs. He is on the District 1 Dallas Animal Shelter Commission and is a board member of both the Feral Friends and PACCC.

What's the number one tip for training your dog? "Be patient," says Watts. "Many animals are relinquished to shelters or rescues because of behavior issues. Nine out of 10 times, it's the human who fails to remain patient and persistent."

Even if you're not the best trainer, your dog will get the royal treatment at the Petropolitan. Whether you need a spa day for your pet or are going away for a week, Watts and his team lovingly give your dog a bone - and so much more.
