On Filtration Systems and Humidifiers: An Interview with David Ferfort of K&S Heating and Air

By David Ferfort

Tell us about your company's foundation and some of the services you offer.

K&S was established in 2008 by Jan Kruger Jr. whose family has been in the HVAC business since the 1960's. We perform a wide range of services including new construction, residential service, remodels, and commercial service. Our company can service, repair, or replace any brand unit no matter where you bought it.

We also offer preventive maintenance programs to all of our commercial and residential customers as well as extended warranties for any residential HVAC unit. With today's technology we offer a complete line of internet ready thermostats that let you cool and heat your home to your preference right from your smart phone or tablet. We heat and ac over 2,000 houses per year so any upgrade you need or want is no problem for us to handle.

What filtration systems and humidifiers are available for residential homeowners?

While there are many, we offer the full line of Honeywell products. Honeywell has a great line of filtration and humidification systems. We often install an inexpensive media filter upgrade that allows you to change your filter only every 6 months versus the typical 30 day filter. We offer humidifiers for the dry indoor heat in the winter and dehumidifiers for the sticky humid air in the summer.

What advantages does the use of these products bring to one's home?

Upgraded filters, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers give you better air quality and a more comfortable atmosphere inside your home.

Do homeowners in Texas typically suffer from bad air?

Texas has many allergens floating throughout the air and many of us suffer from these all year long. Someone with allergies will greatly benefit from purchasing a HEPA Filter. This filter is an upgraded attachment to your current HVAC system that will filter the air constantly, rather than the standard filter that only filters when the unit is running. It also removes smaller allergenic molecules from the air than a normal filter. Another option is adding a UV light to your system. A UV light will kill the bacteria in the air as well as mold spores, and some models also have odor control capabilities.

For someone looking to buy a filtration system or humidifier for their home, where do you suggest they begin?

We have a wide range of information on our website www.kandsac.com or you can also view Honeywell's entire product line at www.forwardthinking.honeywell.com.

What would you advise homeowners when it comes to deciding on the use of these products?

If your home seems more dusty than it should be, if you have pets, or if you have to change your filters more often than 30 days then you may consider a filtration upgrade. When looking to upgrade your filtration system we advise homeowners to look at the MERV rating of the filter and how often they need to be changed.

If you notice a higher level of static, such as getting a little shock when you touch your light switch, you may need to look into a humidification system. When deciding on the proper humidification system you should look at the water use efficiency and the delivery system, i.e. fan powered, bypass, or steam and choose the method that best suits your household.
