The Old Town Meat Market has been serving the Dallas area for more than three decades with locally-attained meats, a variety of spices and rubs, and a commitment to high-quality service. Voted by the Dallas Observer as one of the top Butcher Shops in the area, the shop owners strive to maintain a small-town atmosphere with large flavors.
The origins of the market date back to 1977, when Dickie Grant and Bob Knowles opened up shop. Grant successfully ran the business until 2009, when Knowles' son and daughter-in-law took over as the new owners. Shawn and Sharon Knowles have been running the business ever since!
"I learned the business when I was a kid, working alongside Dickie and my father Bob. My vision for the business is to continue on the way Dickie and my dad opened it", says Shawn Knowles. Utilizing local suppliers to ensure quality meat, Knowles' prices are competitive, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxing and inviting.
So far, he has. Old Town provides freshly cut beef, pork, poultry, and shop-made sausages and jerky. Customers can choose from three freezer packs (15, 20, and 30 pounds) that include pork chicks, split chicken breast, hamburger, beef cutlets, smoked sausage, chopped sirloin, and more. Even the sausage selection is extensive: Old Town offers East Texas Style Hot Links, Italian Sausage, Boudin, Bratwurst, and more. According to the Market's website, the shop's salami was even featured in the Texas Taste Section of Dallas Morning News in 2004 and was recently voted as one of the top 7 Butcher Shops in Dallas by Dallas Observer.
Aside from just freshly cut meat, Old Town also has a wide selection of seasonings to go with each order. A guest can choose to purchase a seasoning individually and to have meats seasoned at the time of sale. One of the most popular seasonings is the Famous Rub, an all-purpose choice that blends black pepper, garlic, kosher salt, a roast beef base, and more.
The Market also has delicious flavors such as chili, honey BBQ, and pecan BBQ, among others. As far as rubs are concerned, customers can try the aloha, bourbon, cherry, jalapeno, and many more.
Daily lunch is served from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. Catering is available (with ample notice), you can choose from ribs, brisket, sausage, ham, turkey breast, chicken and pair them with cowboy beans, potato salad, cole slaw, cobblers or banana pudding. Thanksgiving and Christmas favorites available too - standing rib roast, beef tenderloins, smoked turkeys and dried cured bone-in hams.
The Old Town Meat Market continues to set the bar high since its inception in the seventies. As Sharon Knowles says, "We want to be people's personal butcher." And at this rate, the shop will continue to be a local favorite.
