Ninjas-in-Training Get Their Kicks, Gain Confidence at Shaw Martial Arts

By Pamela Sosnowski

Six days a week, karate students of all ages kick and punch their way to fitness, confidence, and self discipline at Shaw Martial Arts in Irving. Since 2011, the family owned center has been providing black belt instruction in a supportive and fun environment.

Some of the benefits of martial art training include increased strength, greater flexibility, and improved coordination. But participants also gain respect, self-esteem, and knowledge of self-defense. "For my son, who is in Shaw Martial Arts karate, I don't fear him being attacked," says one parent, "but I know he could hold his own if need be."

Shaw Martial Arts offers classes for children as young as four, all-female participants and males 15 and older. The center's teachings combine the Asian techniques of Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Kenpo, and Hapkido. Recognition is achieved through praise, the belt ranking system and tournament competitions. A small instructor to student ratio ensures more individualized instruction. "(We provide) excellent, individualized instruction in a loving family atmosphere," says the staff. The center also provides a mentorship program and a month-to-month after school program sponsored by nearby Radiant Stem Academy that is available only to its students.

On November 7, the center will host a "Nerf War" family night, supplying Nerf bullets and goggles to participants. The event will help promote Shaw Martial Arts to the local community and give the public a chance to visit the school and learn more about American karate.

Shaw Martial Arts is operated by four family members: Eddie, Arif, Rai, and Yasmeen Shaw- who founded the center in 2011. All of them are 2nd degree black belts who have trained with Master James Holan, a 6th degree Black Belt in American Karate and disciple of Grand Master Gambordella. They have all trained with weapons including Samurai sword, kamas, nunchakus, and bo staff.

Learning martial arts at the center involves more than just perfecting the moves. Each student is given the opportunity to demonstrate the techniques in front of the rest of the class, lead exercises, and referee other students during fights, which delivers benefits beyond the physical ones. Says one satisfied Shaw Martial Arts student, "Coaching plus my efforts and determination (have) made me achieve my goals and thus increased my confidence."
