Money-Saving Tips on Your Home Window Repairs: An Interview with Ray Ogden of Falcon Windows, LLC

By Ray Ogden

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Falcon Windows LLC was established to serve not only the remodeling contractors but also the DIY (Do It Yourself) market in North Texas and other areas. We focus on high quality windows and doors for the exterior openings of your home. The products we offer are all substantially more efficient and durable than the typical builder grade windows and doors. We have recently added interior doors to our products offered.

What are some of the common signs that the windows or sliding glass doors in your home need to be repaired or replaced?

Most homeowners do not think much about their windows and doors until they become hard to operate or the insulated glass has fogged due to failure of the seal between the two sheets of glass or the windows and doors leak due to age and neglect. Of course, when the glass is broken and needs to be replaced is the most common event that starts home owners to start the debate of repair or replace. When the repairs are confined to simple glass replacement, or a lock or sash balance has broken then repair is the most economical way to deal with the immediate need.

What are the main benefits of repairing windows versus replacing them?

Repairing windows that are energy efficient is always a good idea because the investment has been made to improve the efficiencies of the home. Older windows should always be considered for replacement.

When is repairing the windows in your house an effective alternative to replacing them?

Even something as simple as replacing the glass starts the home owner thinking about the issues of efficiencies. The basic improvement in the value and appearance of the home when the windows and doors are replaces is an added value second to the instant savings on heating and cooling cost and the improved comfort of the home. Should the repairs on the windows be extensive, or most or all the windows are in need of repair, this would be a great time to seriously consider replacing over repairing.

Is there something that most people in Texas don't know about window repair that they should know?

Probably everything to some extent, but most need to understand that insulated glass cannot be properly repair and should be replaced with a complete new insulated glass unit. Other than simple glass, locks, sash balances and weather seals replacement major damage or failure of the sash frame or window frame will require replacement.

If a professional contractor tell a homeowner that their windows need to be replaced, what would your advice be?

Get a second opinion first, unless you trust your contractor and have had experience with them. If the windows were manufactured prior to 2000 most do not have any LowE coating and many do not have insulated glass in the window. On rare occasions some existing windows can be refitted with insulated glass containing the LowE coatings but most will have to be replaced to gain any energy savings.
