Get Your Body Back on Track with Absolutely Relaxed Massage Therapy

By Marina Jokic

Leslie Guerrero Collins earned her license in massage therapy in 2006, and just a year later opened her own massage clinic. A departure from her college major in English, earning her degree in massage therapy proved an ideal choice for Collins. It gave her a chance to directly improve people's lives through alleviating aches and pains as well as helping them recover from chronic conditions. Absolutely Relaxed Massage offers a variety of massage treatments including Swedish, deep tissue, pre- and post-natal, and even one tailored to cancer patients.

"There are a lot of franchises spas that are popping up everywhere, but my business is a one-woman, local practice," Collins said. "Getting regular massage can help prevent injuries, be used as a reward for meeting goals, or help encourage body awareness for someone who is now thinking about the way their body functions as a whole."

There are a myriad benefits of professional massage especially for certain groups of people. At Absolutely Relaxed Massage, Collins offers customized bodywork for athletes, pregnant women, and people suffering from chronic pain among others. During pregnancy, for instance, the body changes almost weekly. Taking a pause with one's body by indulging in a massage, mothers find the time set aside for a moment of peace can be both physically and mentally rejuvenating. In fact, anyone who decides to book a massage can benefit from stress relief and physical regeneration even if it's only once every few months.

"My particular studio space is pretty unique; I often get [complements on] how 'homey' and comfortable my business space [is] before I can point out this it was indeed a home at some point," Collins said. "Everyone gets the sense that we're here to stay and build relationships, [whereas] sometimes the franchise spas can feel a little impersonal."

This space also houses seven other private practitioners who do various kinds of bodywork and share their common areas with Collins. Tending to the garden and feeding the house cat bring all of the different occupants together in the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie. Collins' room in particular features a plush, heated table, soft sheets, relaxing music, aromatherapy and the sounds of a gentle fountain to set the mood.

"People often ask me how I came to be a massage therapist and I tell them that it fit all my criteria for a great day: the people I meet are always happy to see me and I'm happy to meet them and learn about their lives while offering a service that is actually wonderful for their health and happiness," Collins said.

As a massage therapist, Collins has made it her primary goal to alleviate pain, anxiety, and stress through bodywork and various other auxiliary treatments. Enabling people to find peace and healing their pain is Collins' professional mission.
