Filtration Systems and Humidifiers in Residential Homes: An Interview with Harry Franzreb of Murphy Heating and Air Conditioning

By Harry Franzreb

Tell us about your company's foundation and some of the services you offer.

Murphy Heating & Air Conditioning began in 1976 and has grown to be one of the leading installers of heating and air conditioning systems in the greater San Antonio, Texas metropolitan area. We also offer repair and maintenance service in addition to installing ductwork and insulation. Another area in which we specialize is to improve the indoor air quality inside our valued customers' homes.

What types of filtration systems and industrial humidifiers are available for residential homeowners?

There are several available options to improve the indoor air quality. The most basic one is to replace low MERV filters with higher MERV filters. The higher the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating the more particles, such as dust, smoke, allergens and pet hair, will be removed by the filter from the air. HEPA (High Energy Particulate) filters are a better option than the traditional throw away filters. UV lights, which are used in hospitals, are also available for residential usage.

An ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) is another option to consider. It pulls fresh air into the home while at the same time removing stale air. There are electronic filtration systems that we install that remove up to 99.98 of airborne allergens that pass through the filter and which are 8 times more effective than the best HEPA filters.

What are some of the benefits associated with living with these products?

Improved air quality is something we all strive for. Many homeowners are not aware that the indoor air in their home can be significantly improved. People, particularly those having respiratory difficulties, can experience welcome relief with the installation of a much better air filtration system.

Do homeowners typically suffer from bad air?

Homeowners in general suffer from air that can easily be improved. There a odors produced within the home, such as cooking and cigarette smoke. Pollens, such as mountain cedar, hits our area (greater San Antonio) very hard starting in December.

Is the process for installing one of these systems easy or difficult?

Many filters can be installed by the home over. More sophisticated type of air quality systems should be installed by a licensed heating and air conditioning dealer (contractor) such as Murphy Heating & Air Conditioning.

For someone looking to buy a filtration system or humidifier for their home, where do you suggest they begin?

Anyone interested or in need of improving the air quality within their home should contact a licensed heating and air conditioning dealer (contractor).
