Expert Advice on Building a New Home: An Interview with Jane Turner of Classic Urban Homes

By jane Turner

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Classic Urban Homes prides itself on "Building for the way people really live" ?. Formed in 2005, the company has purposefully built a limited number of custom and speculative homes for discerning clients. We believe in building and designing unique right-sized homes that can adapt to the rapidly changing lifestyles of today's families. Michael believes in building quality over quantity.

Classic Urban Homes not only focuses on the outward appearance of its homes, but also on what's hidden behind the walls. We eagerly educate our buyers about the intentional decisions we make about energy efficiency, indoor air quality, resource conservation, and site design. All are critical to the long-term enjoyment of our high-performance homes.

What are some of the misconceptions that people in Texas have about building a new home when you first meet with them?

When building a home, there are many choices that need to be made such as location, number of rooms, square footage and overall costs not to mention all the finish out materials. The biggest misconception some people make is that a smaller house is less expensive. This is not necessarily true. Upstairs footage is less expensive than the concrete footprint. People often forget to include land pricing into their overall budge too. There are lots of decisions to be made even before the design phase begins. We enjoy the entire process and love to guide our clients through lot selection, design, budget and finish out.

What are the biggest differences between custom- and production-built houses?

We strive to build the best custom home possible. The difference between a custom home vs. a production built home is the possibilities are endless. A production home is usually started with a stock plan and limited finish out choices. As we do work with our preferred vendors, they offer many different selections in all areas of the home, plumbing, lighting, hardwood, flooring and tile, just to name a few.

What do you think is one of the most challenging parts of the building process for homeowners?

We know building a custom home can be challenging and we do our best to take the stress out. We use a scheduling software system so that the client can see what is happening at each phase of the building process. They know when selections need to be decided and what to expect each step of the way.

What tips do you have for homeowners to help them better prepare and avoid stress while their home is being built?

My biggest tip would be to do your research up front, so you can build a relationship with your builder that you trust. We encourage our potential clients to call our past clients and ask about the experience. There is give and take in every relationship and you want to make sure you communicate well with each other. Make sure you choose a builder that understands your vision of what your dream home is.

Over the next three to five years, Classic Urban Homes plans to continue what it does best ? built unique, well-designed homes for a limited number of discerning clients.
