Experience Rustic Sophistication at Houston's Rainbow Lodge

By Vanessa Nason

Situated inside log cabin that's over 110 years old, on an acre of landscaped grounds smack in the middle of Houston, the Rainbow Lodge prides itself on being "sophisticated, not stuffy." That's what Owner Donnette Hansen says, and she explains that their rustic atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for their wild game- and seafood-focused menu.

"My approach to food is comfortable," she says. "I grew up in South Texas in a family of hunters and fishers. Sourcing the best ingredients and presenting them in an approachable way is how I express our level of comfort food."

So how does she balance a simple, wilderness-esque environment with a high class dining experience? Her team is one that knows their way around game and seafood. They are enthusiastic and well trained in the execution of the fare her menu serves. Rainbow Lodge boasts private dining rooms, and the landscaped grounds have a sloping lawn and creek- perfect backdrops for special events from weddings to wine tastings to superbowl parties and VIP celebrations.

"We are not a coat and tie required restaurant but you will be perfectly comfortable all dressed up celebrating your special occasion, gathering for a Sunday Brunch or enjoying our relaxed neighborhood happy hour," she says.

Hansen regards the restaurant as a "refined, historic log cabin" and that's just what it seems to be. Three fireplaces and fabrics and table tops that include antique fly reels, antlers and fresh flowers feel at home next to the winning wine list, craft cocktail assortment and kitchen gardens. It's the best of both worlds. Their seasonal menus are inspired by an on-site citrus grove and a honey bee hive.

Their food, too, seems just as uniquely diverse as their décor, with popular dishes including rainbow trout (their namesake) with lump crab and pecan brown butter, lobster risotto and wild boar carnitas, among others. They serve lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, but this place is guaranteed to be like most other brunch spots. For sophistication with a hint of outback vibe, Rainbow Lodge is the go-to destination.
