Everyone is Joining the Pack at the Carrollton Cycling Club

By Allison Wilson

Joining a local cycling organization, such as the Carrollton Cycling Club, gives you instant access to others with similar interests, who you can learn from at your own pace and skill level. As one of the premier bicycling clubs in North Texas, Carrollton Cycling's 100-plus members participate in regularly scheduled group rides ranging from 10 to 60 miles.

Carrollton Cycling was originally established as a recreational fitness activity by the City of Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department in 1980 and spun off as an independent group in the mid-80s.

"We had a tremendous amount of support from the City of Carrollton Parks and Recreation department early on," says Steve Goff, Board Member for Carrollton Cycling Club. "After the spin-off, we continued to be inclusive of all types of riders and riding styles and tried to make everyone who came out for a ride comfortable. We also tried to have a variety of rides on a regular basis- social rides with a food stop, weekend outings that included an overnight stay, themed rides such as a Halloween cemetery tour, workdays where we would get together and perform maintenance and repairs on our bikes, etc. We also try to do community outreach activities when appropriate with our mission as a club."

The weekly rides take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings. The weekday rides range from informal groups riding at a pace of about 14-20 miles with no leader, to more structured rides with a leader, sweeper and double pace line. There are groups designed for new riders or recovery riders who just want an easier pace, as well as groups who ride at more challenging paces and on more technical terrain.

In addition to promoting fitness and wellness, members of Carrollton Cycling Club also host social events such an annual club picnic and holiday party. Members also receive discounts at local bike shops.
