Engineer Turned CrossFit Gym Owner: 3Q Fitness CrossFit Garland Inspires

By Kelly Church

CrossFit has gained enormous popularity in recent years. For Robert Selders, owner of 3Q Fitness CrossFit Garland in Garland, TX, opening up his own fitness training facility was more than a dream - it was his calling. After a successful career in engineering, Selders switched gears and started 3Q Fitness in 2003 - something he said was driven by his faith.

"I strongly felt it was God's purpose and calling which led me to leave my engineering career then and inspired me to pursue my passion - full force - for helping others overcome barriers and obstacles towards improving their quality of life and achieving their health, fitness and sports performance goals," Selders says.

Selders chose to start his new business venture in Garland, a large city just northeast of Dallas, because of his already established connections and sense of community in the area. He believed that opening 3Q Fitness and adding the CrossFit program was the best way to improve the overall health of the city, which is his ultimate mission.

"We envision creating a functionally fit and healthy community [that] is strong, confident and has the courage to live outside the generally accepted norm that health, fitness, and vitality must decline with age; and diligently and passionately pursues lifelong fitness and performance to strengthen and enhance mind, body and spirit," Selders says. And he feels strongly that his CrossFit is helping to do just that.

CrossFit by nature establishes a support group. Many of the workouts are done in small groups who ultimately get to know each other very well, and the atmosphere is designed to be encouraging and welcoming. At CrossFit Garland, the many people who come together to work out at the gym even refer to each other as "tribe" members. Together, they are a tribe that is there to support one another in the name of health, fitness, and achieving real results.

Selders' goal of creating an environment that supports fitness and builds a community of health-focused individuals in Garland is well on its way to success. He emphasizes that "this is not a gym where you come in, work out to just go through the motions and pay a month-to-month membership fee." For Selders and the CrossFit Garland tribe, this is a lifestyle.
