Dancing to the Rhythms of Zumba at Select Fitness

By Marina Jokic

Many people put off regular exercise because they lack motivation or because they just find it too tedious. Zumba has been incredibly successful at combatting the tedium of exercise through its dynamic movements, upbeat dance music, and team environment. The Zumba fitness program at Select Fitness in Carrollton, Texas fuses Latin rhythms and fluid movements that are designed to blast away calories and tone your body.

Jason Wallace, owner of Select Fitness, says that the primary reason for Zumba being such a successful workout is the fact that it is much more fun as compared to a regular exercise routine.

"Instead of grunts or frowns you'd typically hear at a gym or a CrossFit class, a Zumba class on the other hand involves catchy dance music, clapping hands and gasps of excitement from enthusiastic class participants," adds Wallace. Especially in recent years, Zumba has really made headway in the world of exercise.

"I think it's because of the fact that unlike some workouts, which can be quite exhaustive thus making only some people qualify for it, Zumba on the other hand is for people from any age and is more upbeat and fun," points out Wallace in regard to Zumba's popularity. At Select Fitness, participants can choose not only their workout, but also their instructor. And since every instructor has a distinct taste in music and choreography, you can really experience the gamut of workouts and rarely become bored.

Wallace is a former professional football player in both the NFL and the Canadian Football Leagues, which means he often incorporates a lot of plyometric fitness moves in his choreography and works on all three planes of the body for a complete workout. Wallace also works in healthcare, which gives him an unique perspective into the importance of fitness to a healthy and fulfilling life.

"In addition to Zumba, I offer Zumba Toning, Pound Fitness, Boot Camp inspired group classes, Group Circuit Strength classes, and Personal Training," says Wallace. Soon to come are Mixxedfit classes, Zumba Step, and Barre fitness classes, which will expand the portfolio of programs at the center significantly.

One of their more popular programs, POUND Fitness, is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. This particular workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses into a 45-minute series. Through POUND, one can easily burn between 400 and 900 calories per hour, says Wallace, as well as strengthen and sculpt infrequently used muscles while moving to some very catchy tunes.

For those eager to lose weight and keep it off, Wallace recommends taking a cardio and strength class 3 times per week to begin building lean muscle mass and facilitate weight loss.
