Dog & Kitty City: The Humane Society of Dallas County Strives to Support the Kittens, Canines, and Pet Owners of the Community

By Christian Burney

Dog & Kitty City, operated by the Humane Society of Dallas County, is the only animal shelter in Dallas County that follows a no-kill policy. The staff cares about not only their animals, but their potential owners too.

The DCHS works hard to find the perfect match for pets and people, as Jenny Glasgow, the Assistant Director, explains: "We match their activity levels, what they want their pet to be like, and their living arrangements with the best pet for them. A bouncy 70-pound lab would not do well in a tiny apartment with someone who just wants to watch TV all day."

A large dog would be matched with someone who has a backyard, other dogs to play and socialize with, and an owner who loves hiking or outdoor activity. A smaller, less hyper dog, would be matched with someone living in an apartment or smaller home. The energy levels of each animal generally match those of their potential owners. The DCHS's goal is not to find a home that's "good enough" - it's to find the "forever home:" a place where the animal will be loved, cared for, and raised in an environment perfect for their breed and personality.

"Community awareness is key," Glasgow continues. She reminds that it is important to make sure your pets are spayed or neutered, as unregulated breeding is a huge contributor to the problem of abundant homeless animals. "It is not as easy as you would think to find homes for the 3-6 babies your dog or cat just produced. Many people each day come to us with help to find homes for their pets or their pets' litters. We have a space limit and can't take everything." Since the DCHS does not euthanize animals, they rely solely on adoptions to make room for new animals.

The Humane Society of Dallas County would like to remind everyone to spay and neuter their pets. They are doing all they can to help the poor animals in need, but it is a community problem and requires help from all who can. Visit Dog & Kitty City at 2719 Manor Way in Dallas to find your own furry friend - and to help raise the quality of life for it and the animal that will take its place.
