Create Your Custom Event Menu with A La Carte Events & Catering

A La Carte Events & Catering is a full-service Houston, TX catering and event planning business owned by Laura McAdams who has been working in the service industry since she was 16. After trying to get out of the industry and start working in corporate marketing, McAdams said hospitality always drew her back in. In 2010, she finally opened A La Carte Events & Catering that focuses on creating custom menus that use seasonal ingredients.

"Since 2010, A La Carte has only repeated an entire menu one time, and that was at the client's request," McAdams said. "Good food should be the starting point for every caterer, but we really go the extra mile to listen to our clients, and then build their menu around their vision for their event."

Executive Chef Dean Boelens crafts fresh menus for every event. After hosting a consultation with clients, the team determines a full menu to feed as many people as the guest wants. In fact, for the Super Bowl, A La Carte Events & Catering fed 800 people. Highlights on menus the company has created includes a Hawaiian theme that featured Spam.

"Who knew Spam musubi is really popular [in Hawaii]," McAdams said. "By the way, that wedding reception also featured a whole roasted hog, so they had real food, too."

Past events have also included a Bat Miztvah, where everything on the menu was gluten free, pescatarian and vegetarian friendly, and honored Jewish food traditions. During the holidays, A La Carte Events & Catering also provides a list of menu additions that are special for the holidays. In 2016, some of these included maple jalapeno pork belly bites, and roasted butternut squash and rosemary goat cheese flatbread, among others.

A La Carte Events & Catering can also create a specialty beverage menu for any event. They offer a sample drink menu that includes many cocktails and beers. In fact, some turn beers into event-friendly cocktails, like the Bul's Eye which consists of light beer, ginger ale, lime juice and sugar, garnished with a sugar rim.

Much of A La Carte Events & Catering's business comes from repeat customers, or those who are referred to the catering company. McAdams said that in just one month, 75% of their business was from returning customers.

"There's a great deal of comfort when the client and planner have worked together before, and we truly are passionate about our clients and their events," McAdams said. "We cater an annual Kentucky Derby party for a lovely couple, and I hand make mint extract for the mint juleps every year."

As for McAdams, she said even though she tried to escape the hospitality business, she loves being a part of the most important day in someone's life.

"At the end of the day, I live in a world filled with champagne, smiles and flowers," McAdams said.
