Cake Bliss Delivers a Little Bit Of Bliss In Every Bite

By Pamela Sosnowski

Custom cake designer Dionne Dixon has made it all in cake form. As the owner and founder of her Arlington-based business, Cake Bliss, she has created cakes that resemble everything from movie characters to gumball machines and cigar boxes.

"When you meet me, and decide to book with me, you're guaranteed to get a cake made by ME," she said. "Too many times, a main person and their skills are showcased then someone else that maybe isn't the same skill level ends up making the cake. And the customer is left disappointed. With Cake Bliss, what you see is what you get."

Dixon decided to follow her own bliss when she launched her storefront in 2016, although she had been baking cakes for several years. Her passion began in 2008 when she started taking cake baking classes through a local craft store and making desserts for friends and family members. They loved the results so much that she perfected her craft by studying with expert cake bakers and started selling cakes in 2010.

Since opening the retail location for Cake Bliss a year ago she's made creations for weddings, birthday parties, graduations, celebrations, and more. She's also won a competition on the reality show Cake Hunters and has racked up several customer testimonials that attest to the moistness and flavors of her creations.

One of the factors that helps Cake Bliss stand out is the quality of ingredients Dixon uses, which she says may cost a bit more but are totally worth it.

"You have to use good ingredients to have a good cake," she explained. "Sometimes those things are hard to find locally, so you have to do some research and find the best cocoa, the best vanilla, etc. and not be afraid to spend the money. It may cost more, but those things in the long run will benefit you when your customer loves your product and returns for more and refers you to others."

Cake Bliss is open by appointment only, and cakes start at $75 for a single tier and go up depending on the size and design (a $125 order minimum is required.) Cakes may be picked up or delivered (delivery charges may apply) and Dixon says her business is already taking orders for 2018 as many of her customers are repeat ones. Parents have used her year after year to create birthday cakes as their children grow up. While free tastings are not available, the bakery is happy to provide a few tasting options for a fee.

Dixon also makes custom cupcakes in a variety of batter flavors that include cinnamon and lemon. She's happy to work together with any client to bring their vision of their dream cake into reality, and loves being a small business owner.

"Each and every cake is truly a labor of love," she said. "It's the satisfaction of being able to make something that people love and enjoy. And to step back and say, 'I did it!'"
