Bringing Mind, Body And Spirit In Balance With Hands N Harmony

By S. Mathur

At Hands N Harmony, the holistic approach to wellness treats the individual, rather than separate parts or conditions. The physical, emotional, spiritual and energetic aspects are taken as the four pillars on which to build a healthier lifestyle. For both residents and visitors, the wellness center in Universal City, Texas, offers a range of natural and non-invasive health care treatments. Services range from skin and body care to fitness classes, nutritional counseling and energy healing.

Above all, the center offers an opportunity to take control of your own life, with help from an experienced holistic practitioner. Owner and licensed massage therapise Nancy Brewington brings 10 years of experience to her mission.

"Research and studies show you can greatly benefit from carving out more time in your busy schedule for things like regular exercise, meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi or anything like massage therapy," she said. "Also modalities such Reflexology and Reiki have helped people suffering with stress. As soon as clients enter, they are welcome by an array of plants, diffusing of calming aromatherapy diffusing in all rooms and relaxing music."

There's even a tranquility room at Hands N Harmony, for clients to relax and enjoy some quiet time. Brewington, who is a retired US Army Major, brings her varied experience to the task of providing accessible and affordable natural care. She has traveled with a medical mission to Ecuador and earned a nursing degree before opening the wellness center. It has always been her goal to serve others through healing and education, and the focus at the center is on balancing and harmonizing the mind, body and spirit.

Essential oils treatments are used to help clients relax, to improve skin and digestion, and much more. Their use in beauty treatments and medicine goes back thousands of years.

"Early evidence of the usage of essential oils dates to the period of 3000-2500 BC," Brewington said. "There are numerous references of essential oils throughout the Bible. Essential oil uses range from aromatherapy, personal beauty care, and natural medicine treatments."

Essential oils are made from plants, by distilling oils from various parts like flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels. The oils' small molecular structure allows them to be rapidly absorbed by the skin. Because they are so concentrated, Brewington cautions that essential oils must be used with care, as high concentrations may cause irritation or an allergic reaction. They can be tested by applying a drop or two to the inside of the arm near the elbow, to check for sensitivity.

Essential oils can be diluted with carrier oils like jojoba, almond or coconut oil. Their calming effect can also be achieved by placing them in a water based diffuser.
