Austin's Oasis Offers Beautiful Views of Lake Travis

By Courtney Clark

Nestled by the water in Austin is an oasis- literally. The Oasis on Lake Travis, what the owner calls the Sunset Capital of Texas, is more than just a restaurant. It's also a massive entertainment venue containing several banquet rooms, an indoor facility with retractable roof panels, and traditions that have been established for years.

Beau Theriot, a Texas native, wanted to open a restaurant on a hill. He purchased the property, 500 acres of land containing only a ranch house, in 1979. Motivated by his motto, which the website says is "create without reservation," he opened the Oasis Restaurant and Cantina Del Lago by 1982. More than two decades later, it was the largest restaurant in the state with seating of up to 2800.

In 2005, a fire destroyed the restaurant- but this didn't deter Theriot. He used the event as an opportunity and created "a four story dream facility." Each room is designed with a different atmosphere. Guests can reserve the Visa Grande for a small gathering, enjoy the Sunset Villa for Tuscany-inspired design, or enjoy a private event with a beautiful sunset view in Lakeside Terrace. Today the Oasis seats almost 2500 people and offers gorgeous views of Lake Travis.

The Oasis is also a place for tradition. When Theriot was traveling in France a few years ago, he fell in love with the idea of the Pontes des Arts Bridge, also known as the "locks of love" bridge. Although the bridge has sense been taken down, Theriot brought this tradition with him. The Oasis allows guests to attach locks to their posts; the locks contain names and dates written on them, and folks can throw away or keep the key to symbolize their relationships.

The Sunset Photo Contest is another tradition, one that was started over twenty years ago. Melody English, the Oasis' Marketing Coordinator, says the contest is "a wonderful way to include our guests and community as being a part of the Oasis." Everyone is invited to take a photo of the sunset from Oasis decks and then submit one to the contest. The grand prize is $1000 and the contest is always paired with a charity.

The Oasis is a great place to stop not only for food, but also to enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer Lake Travis in the hills and by the water. The location is perfect for friends and family of all ages, who can eat, listen to live music, and spend quality time together. As English says, "The atmosphere at the Oasis is definitely unforgettable and lends its way to creating lifelong memories."
