At Texas Greenbird, Fitness Is Fun

By S. Mathur

Fitness is fun at Texas Greenbird, with a variety of group fitness classes for students at all levels. The studio is a favorite with residents of Austin, TX for its energetic workouts and lively playlists.

"We specialize in providing high energy Pilates, Barre, and Yoga classes," Lauren Whitehead, Lead Instructor and Co-Owner said. "For those that want a little cardio mixed in we offer a wildly popular Barre+Kickboxing class. Our clients love the blasts of cardio mixed with the fat-burning and sculpting barre intervals."

High energy does not mean high impact, though, and the low-impact classes are focused on strengthening the core. They draw on the philosophies of Yoga, Pilates, Barre. The core is more than your six-pack abs, according to Whitehead.

"The core is made up of deep abdominal muscles, back muscles, the pelvic floor and the diaphragm," she said. "We're also building lean, long muscles with the precise movements at the Barre. The Green Bird Fitness classes are focused on building balance, strength, and preventing injuries."

The results are what keeps members coming back.

"It's not just about the number on the scale, it's about feeling stronger, having more energy, and increasing your mood," Whitehead said. "Clients are reporting back to us with all sorts of amazing results: They're developing abdominal definition, getting faster half-marathon and marathon run times, losing inches off their waist, seeing some serious guns (arms) taking shape, and shedding pounds."

That and the music, actually. Greenbird playlists are famous and the studio even offers occasional Music Video Dance Choreography classes. Routines include Thriller (during Halloween), Beyonce's Single Ladies, and Britney Spears' "Slave 4 U". Playlists are posted on the website for anyone wanting the right music for their Friday evening party.

All classes are designed to make you work. The Barre classes are developed from the principles of Pilates, yoga, dance and sports conditioning. The low-impact moves at the ballet barre are set to music and suitable for all levels of fitness. Pilates mat classes focus on the core and also have a soundtrack of lively and upbeat music. Flow yoga connects breath to movement. Like all classes at Greenbird, all classes are suitable for people at different levels of fitness.

Class schedules and pricing are all listed on the website, making it easier to sign up for classes online. New students get one week of classes free and beginning discounts. There's also a babysitting service. Specials include discounts for teachers and students, a bridal package and deals for new moms. Whitehead's goal is to help people become their best selves through exercise. And to have a lot of fun while doing so.
