What are the key qualifications of a professional painter?

A great painter is the one who is trustworthy and affordable. One who always uses quality material and deliver exceptional work.

What does every homeowner need to know about a potential painter before hiring him for a job?

First of all, he/she must know the background check of a company. Always read reviews on different sites, not just Google. Referrals are the best however that does not mean if you find on online is not going to deliver a great job. My employees have been with me for the last 12 years and I trust them with children and customer properties.

What are the biggest challenges that homeowners run into before finding and hiring the right painter?

First, most homeowners don't know the painters or the products they use. As I discussed in last question, finding the right contractor takes a little more than clicking on a random website. Some people may think Homeadvisor or similar sites are the places to pick the right one. The fact is Not all these lead generating sites even care about homeowner safety. They only want to charge any painter with valid insurance $35 per lead or a fixed monthly cost. As a painter I recommend sites such as Angie's list, yelp, and the good contractor's list. They always follow up and check with the homeowner.

Second, every manufacturer has different types of product. Just because they tell you they buy Sherwin Williams paint, does not mean it's going to be the premium quality. For instance Promar 400 is about $20.00 less expensive than Super paint. Always ask what other options you have when it comes to material.

Should painters offer any type of guarantee? What would it typically cover?

Yes, one to three years. Mostly for exterior painting due to wind and weather related issues. If you live in Seattle you need products that are more resistant to humidity or if you live in Texas you will be dealing with heat and wind. It's painter's job to recommend the right material.

Do you have any advice on what people want to stay away from and what they should do if they are unhappy with some aspect of the painting job?

First, ask the contractor to fix what needs to be done. If it's accidental, a good contractor is willing to apologize and fix the problem to make sure homeowner is happy. However, if wrong doing is not admitted, use any legal means to get your money back. Also, leaving reviews online will help others to find out who they are going to be dealing with.
