An Overview of Slate Roofing: An Interview with Robert Burnley of Eco Tech Roofing

By Robert Burnley

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

I started my company approximately 8 years ago. I was in the facility management business (Construction) for many years. Quality craftsmanship was my main focus as well as curb appeal when finishing a residential or commercial project. I enjoy using the latest insulation and energy saving products.

Please explain for our readers who have never heard of slate roofing before, what exactly it is.

Slate roofing is composed of metamorphic rock. The prices of slate usually reflect the grade. The use of slate roofing is usually determined when designing a custom made home or simply an upgrade. Slate comes in different colors, textures and sizes. Slate can be imported from different parts of the world and can beautify a home. Slate roofing installers are usually trained by slate manufacturing companies and highly skilled craftsmen.

What are the main advantage of slate roofing?

Slate roofing gives a home the appearance of old world charm, especially if copper gutters are installed as well as copper roof accessories. Slate is naturally water resistant and can last 80-100 years. It is affixed to wooden battens with copper nails or a more modern way, stainless steel hooks.

What maintenance does slate roofing require?

Slate roofing requires little to no maintenance. It may need to be cleaned from time to time depending on how shaded it is. Algae sometimes grows on it in certain conditions but it is easy to clean off. Since it does not absorb water, it will not crack from freezing.

For someone who is interested in slate roofing, where do you suggest they begin? With an estimate, consultation, or etc.?

I strongly recommend a consultation to determine if slate is right for you.
