Amazeballz Proves That It's Hip to Be Round

By Pamela Sosnowski

"Amazeballz!" is the very reaction many customers have to Jaime Wiggins' Plano-based bakery by the same name. Since 2015 the shop has been wowing the local community with its creative array of cakeballs, cupcakes, custom designed cakes, and more. Perhaps no one is more surprised than Wiggins herself; as she explained, the business venture was "the greatest accident" that ever happened to her.

"I worked in corporate for years, and never dreamed of owning a bakery," she said. "I learned to make cakeballs because my husband and I love sweets, but were trying to eat smaller portions. I would bring the extras to work, and people started ordering them from me. Four months later, I've got hundreds of orders for Valentine's Day."

Her cakeballs were such a hit with coworkers, friends, and family members that Wiggins eventually decided to quit her job and convinced her husband to help her open a bakery. During her downtown Plano shop's first month of operation, over 11,000 cakeballs were sold. Wiggins opened a second location, in Firewheel Town Center in October of 2016. Her treats, which come in a variety of flavored batters and icings, stand out from similar products from competitors.

Amazeballz' other standout product is Wiggins' boozeballz, which are cakeballs infused with alcohol for the 21+ crowd. "The alcohol is NOT baked out," she stated. Popular boozeballz flavors include coconut cream with coconut vodka, chocolate Irish cream, and espresso vodka brownie.

Amazeballz is open daily and features over 30 rotating flavor combinations such as birthday cake, red velvet, banana pudding, and more. Popular boozeballz flavors include coconut cream with coconut vodka, chocolate Irish cream, strawberry & champagne, and espresso vodka brownie. Wiggins and her team are always experimenting with seasonal flavors to keep the selection fresh and fun. Besides her famous cake balls and boozeballz, the bakery also sells cookie sandwiches in flavors such as chocolate chip and M&M. French macarons from Bisous Bisous are also available.

The bakery is also well loved for its custom designed desserts. In the past year alone, Wiggins and her team created cakepops shaped like animals, superheroes, and Star Wars characters as well as glittery balls of bling that look like they're coated in liquid gold or silver. The shop has made cake pops and cakeballs for weddings, birthday parties, and other special occasions, and custom cakes for weddings, birthday parties, and showers.

"Our business is known for cakeballs, but many don't know that we do custom orders," Wiggins said. "We've got so much talent and creativity on show at the bakery. We welcome challenges and love working with the customers to make their dreams come true."

For a third year in a row, Amazeballz was awarded the "Best Cupcake/Bakery in Plano" award by the Plano Star Courier. Part of the bakery's success, says Wiggins, is the camaraderie she shares with her coworkers and the local community.

"I love my job, because of the people; the hard working employees and the fun-loving customers," she said. "Being a small business owner is never easy, but at the end of the day, knowing that my company brings smiles to others' faces makes it all worth it."
