A Warm, Friendly and Supportive Place for Bible-Based Teachings

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Memorial Lutheran Church in Old Katy has been a warm, friendly and supportive place to be inspired and led by God's Word for over 70 years. Serving the area through its ministries, missions and preschool, this church offers Christ-centered, biblically based connections to God and the community. Their mission, exclaims Pastor John Davis, is "extending the Community of Christ wherever we go!"

"Perhaps different than other congregations, we emphasize a discipleship focus with a mission priority in all that we do," explains Davis. "Our goal is to make disciples, understanding that disciples make more disciples." This is definitely a congregation centered around God's Word.

Memorial is continually looking to reach out into the community in multiple ways. One way is through community events. As part of Rice Harvest Festival, the church provides a family friendly carnival, while also opening up its facilities to weary festival goers. Hosting concerts is a favorite church activity bringing in groups such as the African Children's Choir, the Texas A&M Women's Chorus, the Concordia University (Irvine, CA) hand bells and the Houston Lutheran Chorale.

Other events also include the summertime VBS that is presented at no or minimal cost and Trunk or Treat in the fall. "At Christmas," Davis tell us, "we bring our worship filled with special music to Katy Mills Mall to reach out to all of the shoppers."

Even more importantly, Memorial is committed to sharing the good news of Jesus in word and deed to the community, and especially to people in need. Memorial has a quality preschool that is highly regarded by area educators as it "inspires and empowers students through Christ-centered education." The Christ Clinic, where uninsured or underinsured receive healthcare and health-related services is a ministry that was founded by Memorial and is still strongly supported by them. At Christmas, the church sponsors dozens of families, along with the children of the Krause Center.

"We have mission groups that serve the community in diverse ways," notes Davis, "from helping students who are young parents in Katy ISD (including a cooking class for them), to developing a comfort dog ministry to serve the greater Houston area, to vision clinics in Kenya. There are multiple ways to connect within the church through children, youth, and family ministries, as well as music, missions, worship, and more."

Have you recently moved to Katy? Memorial will welcome you, not just to worship, but also to be a part of something bigger than themselves. "Our focus is more on making disciples, being partners in the Gospel, and having people become part of a community of faith than on becoming 'members'", Davis says. The church does offer a "welcome" class to those who would like to become connected to Memorial's mission and ministry, as well as confirmation classes for new Christians and/or new Lutherans. If you would like to visit, Sunday worship is at 8 and 10:45 am, with Bible study at 9:30. You could also come to Wednesday night's Living in 3D for all ages centered around dinner, worship, learning, and mission.
