"Good Beer, Good Food, Great People" at Garland's Intrinsic Brewing

By Courtney Clark

Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery is serving up delicious barbeque and brews in historic Downtown Garland. In true Texas barbeque nature, Intrinsic focuses on excellence and creativity, offering savory flavors and fresh foods six days a week.

Owner Cary Hodson is a garland native who says Intrinsic was opened "to be a positive force for redevelopment of both the economy and image of the downtown area." In addition to serving food and beer, the restaurant aims to bring the community together by offering a meeting place that, as the Facebook describes, establishes an "invigorating environment" through "creative passion, hard work, honesty, and intrinsic values."

The atmosphere is certainly inviting. With what Google describes as an "industrial-chic environment," the exposed steel, rustic wood, and soft yellow lighting creates a cozy place to grab some beer and barbeque. The room is open, with a lengthy bar on one side and picnic-style tables on the other. Next door is the patio, created from a former store that was damaged in a fire. The outdoor area is great for live music, the string lights hanging above diners' heads between gritty brick walls.

The patio is great for live events, according to Hodson. In the past, Intrinsic has hosted fundraising and charity events such as Save the World Brewery; other events have included the St. Patrick's Day 5K and Festival, the Crawfish Boil, and Rock Fest. Board games are by the brewery's entrance for family-friendly fun, yet happy hour is great fun for adults, as well.

As for the restaurant's savory appeal, all barbeque meats are smoked "low and low in small batches," according to the website. Once meats run out from demand, customers will just have to come back the next day to get what they were wanting. Guests can order meat by the pound, meat plates, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. To go with pork, chicken, brisket, ribs, or sausage, choose among sides such as cole slaw, corn nuggets, and mac n' cheese.

Of course, Intrinsic wouldn't be itself without its other half: the beer. The website explains, "Not only do we offer our own seasonal selection of hand-crafted beers, we keep a rotation of guest beers," as well. Aficionados can choose between brown ales, lagers, fruit ales, IPAs, stouts, and more. The brewery even offers growlers for beer to-go. And for those who aren't beer-drinkers, there's a wine list and full bar.

Though Intrinsic hasn't been open for very long, it's already earned 4.5 out of 5 stars on Facebook and Google. For delicious food, great drinks, and a fun environment, this brewery is intrinsic to your entertainment.
